Course Description
VMware Workstation develops practical capability for a secure desktop-virtualization lab in which administrators can build, connect, protect, tune, and recover local virtual machines without compromising the host workstation. The learning path begins with platform architecture, installation, and lab readiness and progresses through virtual machine build, guest tools, snapshots, and lifecycle, keeping architecture, access, dependencies, and measurable acceptance connected.
Applied work is situated in a mixed Windows and Linux engineering lab with constrained host resources, isolated test networks, removable devices, and repeatable rollback needs. Participants then address virtual networking, storage, devices, and data exchange and performance tuning, troubleshooting, backup, and handover, using host readiness record and verified Workstation installation baseline, virtual-machine build sheet and snapshot recovery test, network path matrix and virtual-storage validation log, and Workstation troubleshooting runbook and accepted performance baseline to compare intended design with observed behavior.
By completion, learners can implement, validate, troubleshoot, and hand over the course workflows with defensible evidence. The final operating record identifies unresolved risks, monitoring requirements, recovery actions, owners, and the next controlled improvement.
What You Will Learn
- Frame desktop virtualization use cases, host hardware and operating-system requirements, Workstation editions and licensing as explicit design decisions and record the assumptions that could alter the result.
- Build and verify virtual-machine inventory and folders, guest compatibility, default preferences, lab naming standards, installation verification; preserve the outcome in host readiness record and verified Workstation installation baseline.
- Sequence new virtual-machine wizard, virtual hardware versions, CPU and memory allocation so prerequisites, access, dependencies, and service impact remain visible throughout the change.
- Trace “a snapshot chain consuming host storage until a guest can no longer be suspended” through virtual-machine build sheet and snapshot recovery test, isolate the earliest divergence, and retest the corrected path.
- Connect bridged networking, NAT networking, host-only networking with capacity, security, resilience, and the operating model expected after handover.
- Challenge network editor, virtual disks and disk growth, ISO and removable-media handling, shared folders and clipboard controls, USB and peripheral assignment with normal, boundary, and recovery cases, then explain why the accepted state is supportable.
- Correlate configuration, logs, path behavior, and recent changes when diagnosing “host memory pressure causing several guests to pause while only one machine appears unhealthy”.
- Deliver Workstation troubleshooting runbook and accepted performance baseline with rollback conditions, ownership, monitoring needs, and the next controlled improvement.
SkillDynamo Training Approach
Learners alternate between host-side configuration and guest-side verification, capture baseline evidence before each change, compare networking modes, and finish with a reusable workstation support checklist. Delivery includes instructor demonstrations, guided exercises, scenario comparison, validation checklists, structured troubleshooting, and an evidence-backed improvement plan.
