Course Description
Computer Forensics Foundation develops practical capability to understand digital forensic principles, legal authority, evidence preservation, acquisition, analysis, reporting, and case closure. The learning path begins with forensic principles, legal authority, ethics, readiness, and chain of custody and advances through evidence identification, collection, imaging, hashing, preservation, and documentation, connecting requirements and methods with accountable roles, reviewable evidence, and measurable decisions.
Applied work is anchored to an investigation team examining endpoints, removable media, user activity, and system artifacts after a suspected security incident. Learners then address file systems, deleted data, logs, timelines, user artifacts, and analysis and findings, reporting, peer review, presentation, retention, and case closure, producing forensic authority and custody record, acquisition and integrity worksheet, artifact analysis and timeline workbook, and forensic findings and case-closure report.
On completion, learners can translate the subject into repeatable work, challenge weak evidence, explain decisions, and hand over prioritized improvements with clear ownership.
What You Will Learn
- Explain forensic principles and legal authority and connect the result to admissible investigation activity.
- Evaluate ethics, readiness, and chain of custody using criteria suited to trusted evidence handling.
- Use evidence identification and preservation to strengthen controlled collection decisions across daily operations.
- Review forensic imaging and cryptographic hashing against clear evidence requirements for verified data integrity.
- Map responsibilities for file systems, logs, and user artifacts and confirm ownership of focused technical analysis.
- Communicate findings about deleted data and timeline correlation with recommendations for supported event reconstruction.
- Apply findings and peer-review practices to produce reliable evidence for clear forensic reporting.
- Compare retention and case-closure requirements when selecting proportionate actions for complete investigation records.
